Abstract

Abstract. The article provides a review of the literature on traditional crafts published in Kazakhstan. The result showed that eleven atlases devoted to woodworking crafts were published, of which only two literatures were selected for the review. These are “Atlas of Central Asia. Kazakhstan” (2001) and “Atlas. Modern Kazakh Crafts” (2023). The collected materials from this literature related to woodcraft are considered from a philosophical point of view through the prism of craft epistemology. Both selected atlases contain a comprehensive description of traditional craft practices in Kazakhstan, including wood processing technology, ornamental symbolism and its cultural and philosophical context. Transformations in craft practices and the social status of artisans were also considered. The content and volume of these atlases allowed us to identify relevant information regarding the cultural significance of woodworking. Special attention was also paid to the ontological, aesthetic and social aspects of the art of woodworking, which was inherited from our ancestors. The symbolism of the ornaments depicted on traditional wooden products was identified and a comparative analysis of the patterns was carried out. The purpose of the article is to respect cultural values and preserve national identity in the era of globalization.
