Abstract. The history of the formation of the style of modern American versification, and in particular the poetry of Native Americans, is currently under active study by literary historians. The distinctive role of Mary Hunter Austin, a renowned American writer, essayist, and poet, has only recently been the focus of scholarly inquiry. The author of this study focuses on the work of Austin as a theorist, literary interpreter and poet.
The work systematically reveals the general history of the process under study, identifies its key points and the names of the main characters, and outlines the most promising paths for further research of the issue.
