HISTORIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW OF FOUR MAJOR SCIENTIFIC AND ETHNOGRAPHIC WORKS OF KAZAKH SCIENTIST-ETNOGRAPHER HALEL ARGYNBAYEV

Abstract

This article briefly examines the biography of Khalel Argynbaev, a leading Kazakh ethnographer, and provides a historiographical review of four of his major scientific and ethnographic works.

A monograph entitled “Ethnographic sketch of Kazakh cattle breeding” was published, which ethnographically describes Kazakh livestock breeding before the revolution. Taking into account the natural features of the Kazakh land, the issues of migration depending on the time of year, the folk practice of monitoring the weather and treating livestock diseases, while caring for livestock, are fully covered. Sufficient attention is also paid to the narration of various customs and traditions that have developed in connection with various religious beliefs.

This monograph entitled “Family and Marriage in the Kazakh People” is devoted to the study of the history of the emergence and development of the Kazakh family and marriage. Based on a large amount of specific data, the scientist studied pre-revolutionary family forms, family relationships and the kinship system, the status of women and raising children, funeral rites; also the forms of marriage, the wedding ceremony and the customs associated with it, the rights of the levirate and the future bride, etc., have been preserved as remnants of ancient forms of marriage.

“Crafts of the Kazakh people” Kazakh crafts have their own history of growth and development.

The origin of tribes and clans occupies a special place in the history of studying the national history of the Kazakh people by writing the genealogy of the “Great Zhuz” in the work “On the Kazakh Chronicle”.

Materials and methods of research: When writing the article, Halel Argynbaev's own works «Family and Marriage in the Kazakh Nation», «Crafts of the Kazakh Nation», «Ethnographic Essay on Kazakh Cattle Breeding», «About Kazakh Genealogy» were taken as sources. Historical-comparative method, source analysis, generalization, systematization, cultural-historical, social, etc. are used in the article.
