This article explores the practice of appointing museum leadership in Western Europe through boards of trustees, as well as in Eastern European and Central Asian countries through authorized cultural institutions. The aim of the research is to implement modern methods of selecting and appointing museum directors in domestic museums. Successful practices are exemplified by the role of boards of trustees in museums in the United Kingdom and the concept competition process for selecting museum leaders in Russia and Uzbekistan, the results of which lead to the appointment of museum directors.
Contemporary museum practices indicate that the Western European model of museum management is considered advanced. Appointing a museum director through a concept competition not only ensures transparency in the selection process but also significantly influences the development strategy of museums and the achievement of their long-term objectives. Adopting a similar approach in Kazakhstan's museums could contribute to the formation of a new generation of skilled museum managers within the domestic museum sector.
The implementation of this approach may require changes to existing regulations and legal frameworks governing the cultural sector. Therefore, the article provides an overview of current legislative and regulatory documents concerning the selection and appointment of museum leadership in Kazakhstan and offers recommendations for optimizing this process.
