Abstract. Newsreels are an important source directly reflecting the daily life, work processes, and social conditions of people of a given period. These materials can contain a wealth of interesting news and events. Their value is obvious. Newsreels of Kazakhstan from the 1950s to the 1980s were produced by specialized film and photography departments of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, research institutes, and government agencies. Film themes were determined by the State Committee for Science and Technology of the Kazakh SSR. Newsreels and research materials provide a broad understanding of the state and development of science and technology in a given period, making them highly valuable in the study of social history. They contain information reflecting specific aspects of the economy, science, and production, while photographic documentation from newsreels complements written historical data. The archival documents analyzed in this article contain events related to the development of the social history of our country.
The purpose of this article is to examine the documentary value of newsreels filmed in Kazakhstan from the 1950s to the 1980s for the study of social history and to expand the scope of their use as sources. The newsreel materials analyzed in our research demonstrate that historical scenes captured on film at that time are an invaluable source for creating a realistic, dynamic image of working-class life in Soviet-era industrial enterprises and the region's social history.
