Abstract. The initiative to gather the treasure trove of ancient Kazakh musical instruments, which had been lying neglected and forgotten in the museum funds across our vast country, was implemented at the state level for the first time through the vision and project of the state and public figure, ethnographer Uzbekali Zhanibekov (1931–1998). Among the multifaceted works of this prominent figure, one particular achievement that has remained unrecognized, unwritten, and even unacknowledged by some to this day is U. Zhanibekov’s role in establishing the history of the creation and development of the Ykhlas Museum of Folk Musical Instruments.
This year marks the 45th anniversary of the founding of this museum, which opened its doors to the public on April 24, 1981. The history of the museum’s establishment originates from the dedicated efforts of individuals who deeply cared for the spiritual and cultural heritage of our people. Having weathered many historical milestones, the museum has now become a source of national pride and an internationally recognized cultural center. In this article, the author examines U. Zhanibekov’s role in shaping the history of the foundation and development of the Ykhlas Museum of Folk Musical Instruments, alongside issues directly related to the history of the cultural heritage preserved within it. Depending on their specific characteristics, the artifacts of Kazakh culture in the museum’s collection serve as research subjects for various humanities, including art history, organology (instrument studies), museology, archaeology, lithophones, dramology, material culture studies, as well as poetry and religious-ritual principles.
