Abstract. The object of the study is a unique historical and cultural artifact of Kazakhstan: the old cover on the grave of a medieval major religious figure, the philosopher Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, located in the underground hilvet of the Azret Sultan Museum Reserve. The most important aspect of studying the remains of the cover was the study of its gold threads. The main methods in its study were optical-physical and chemical-technological methods using scanning electron microscopy. In the course of the work, the author comes to the conclusion that the time of the creation of the cover is the time synchronous with the construction of the mausoleum under amir Timur: the end of the 14th - the beginning of the 15th century. It was the data obtained in this way that were also confirmed by the information of a well-known narrative historical source - the «Diary» of the Spanish ambassador and traveler R.G. de Clavijo. In the work, these data from the «Diary» of R.G. de Clavijo are given in a new version of the translation. In conclusion, the author notes that a unique artifact of Kazakhstan and world history (the old cover of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi) requires appropriate restoration and conservation work and handling.
